Diptychs . Yosemite Valley, Sierra Nevada Mountains . California
It was almost February with a bit of snow on the ground. I arrived in Yosemite about mid-day. I took a tripod a Nikon DSLR and my Kodak Stereo camera with about ten rolls of film.
After a bite to eat, I made my way up to the giant Mariposa Sequoias for a look. Along the way, I diverted from the trail to capture shots of small streams and snow covered pines just beyond view. The Sequoias were immense. I remember most, not their size, which was difficult to scale without other people around, but the bright green moss covering the rich brown bark roots, sitting in piles of white snow. Most of my stereo images are close-ups, focusing on texture. The digital images, using my wide-angle lens capture some of the scale. I arrive in the valley along the Merced in the late afternoon. It is a bit late to attempt a lot of shooting. Yet, I need to get my bearings of the terrain.
I decide to spend the night in a motel in town, watching local news and cross-referencing maps of the park. I’m up at 4am. Stereo images of Yosemite at sunrise would be a treat. I make a cup of motel coffee and head out. It is entirely black when I arrive in the village. It’s also very cold. Not many cars were on the roads making it a slower quieter drive through the cutbacks. There are no signs saying where the landmarks are so it’s hard to gauge where to be. The sky is muted blue and grey at first light: not very remarkable at first.
