local global waters
A year-long fellowship at Cornell University’s Society for the Humanities led to the development of the streaming radio project Routes Radio, with faculty, theater students, and members of the local community serving as DJs. Live audio had become an interest of mine while in graduate school at New York University, Interactive Telecommunications Program. The technical setup for the Cornell Station was facilitated through the Office of Distance Learning and the Graduate Film and Video Department, chaired by Tim Murray.
Upon leaving Cornell, I joined The Ross School in East Hampton Long Island New York as Dean of Media Studies. Two years in, I set up a laptop and mixing board to stream a day of poetry produced by middle school students. Eventually, the entire school, both students and teachers, were engaged in Ross Radio virtual audio projects. After leaving Ross in 2003, I opened my own art center, Radio Free Hamptons - online in Sag Harbor. The multi-purpose cybercafe, digital art gallery, and radio station quickly transformed into a local global community featuring community residents serving as producers of music and talk shows, poetry readings and social change events.
