The Larger Landscape Conversation: Whose Land?
The very ground in which our civic life is embedded was itself acquired through centuries of warfare and equally pernicious lawfare. Over the past several years, many leading cultural institutions, including the Gardner Museum, have worked to begin a process of acknowledging this racist past as well as their historic role in various forms of structural discrimination and cultural appropriation.
Whose Land? convenes conversation on the role of landscape architecture and urban planning in relation to the acknowledgment, reparation, and return of land taken from Indigenous peoples. The Larger Landscape Conversation is a recurring series that brings together visionaries across disciplines to discuss the intersection of creativity, lived experience, and social justice.
This conversation features environmental justice scholar Ghazal Jafari, activist Amber Starks, and Massachusett tribal leader Elizabeth Solomon. The program is hosted and moderated by Charles Waldheim, the Gardner's Ruettgers Curator of Landscape and Irving Professor of Landscape Architecture at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design.
